STUDY ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SUSTAINABLE DRAINAGE SYSTEMS, LAMINATION AND WATER TREATMENT
City/Region : LEGAZPI , Spain

The main goal of the project is to study the existing possibilities in Legazpi to implement Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUD) systems.

The increase runoff coefficient caused by surface waterproofing and lower concentration times has forced us to address how the natural functions of soil in the water cycle can be restored.

EU Green Deal Policy Areas Addressed
Eliminating pollutionClean energy
Pathways followed
  • Involve citizens through participatory implementation
  • Accelerate sustainability and innovation through public procurement
  • Ensure new policies take socio-cultural changes resulting from innovative technologies into account
Context

Legazpi is an industrial municipality with 8,400 inhabitants and with a high percentage of waterproofed surfaces.

It has a sustainability plan and to combat Climate Change (Adaptation and Mitigation) - LEGAZPI KLIMA 2030: http://www.legazpi.eus/es/bizi-2/desarrollo-sostenible/legazpi-klima-2030

The plan defines different actions to restore the water cycle by means of using SUD.

In Action

The transformative action is based on study the municipal as a whole, taking different aspects into account, such as the terrain, geology, existence of contaminated soil and the rainfall, in order to establish which technique can be implemented in each zone: seepage, lamination and water treatment.

Integration
Results

It is hard to quantify the results as it is a study.

These will be measured during each specific action implemented.

Impact

The actions proposed in the study are envisaged to reduce the risk of flooding in periods of torrential rain, increase thermal comfort and protecting health in heat waves (increasingly more frequent and intense), and treatment of surface water and wastewater in individual buildings.

Challenges and lessons learned

Lessons learned: importance of restoring the natural water cycle.

Challenges: lack of knowledge about new technical solutions and the outcome of their implementation
