"Adopt your Streetlight" - relightingproject
Organisation : Pajopower CVBAso , Belgium

With the help of the PajoPower cooperative, we are substituting the current street lighting along the four major access roads to the city of Halle with more energy-efficient LED lamps. The up-front investments were made by the Pajopower associates, and the city of Halle will reimburse PajoPower using portions of the monthly savings in energy costs.

  • The street lighting along the major access roads needed replacing. The old lights were not only obsolete but also quite inefficient. The city chose to replace the oldest and the most energy consuming lamps.
  • There is an agreement to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide 20% by 2020. The city of Halle has signed the 'Covenant of Mayors', but the city must also operate within a very strict budget.
In Action
  • Alderman Dieuwertje Poté (CD&V) said that "in order to save an annual energy cost of 69.000 euro, the city of Halle had to invest 225.000 euro in the replacement of the lighting along the major access roads." With the financial and advisory help of the PajoPower cooperative, the transformation to energy-efficient LED lighting was possible.
  • As a cooperative, PajoPower made it possible for anyone to acquire at least one share worth 250 euro, or up to a maximum of 20 shares per shareholder (5,000 euro). The initiative is promoted with the slogan “adopt your street lamp”.

Through this specific project, we can reduce energy use by up to 400.000 kWh or the equivalent of the annual electric energy consumption by 115 families in Halle, thus saving 92 tonnes of CO2.

Challenges and lessons learned
  • This project is rather small and is being carried out by a diverse group of volunteers. Although it is a small project, it functions as a steppingstone for larger initiatives in our region.
  • Because the project is small it is easy to transfer and replicate in other communities and cities. Many cities are facing similar situations in which street lights are becoming obsolete and will have to be replaced in the future.
