This project fouces on giving Energy Efficiency Awareness Training to municipal employees and students and is carried out by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

The purpose of the project is to create an energy efficiency culture, behavioral change and energy awareness among students and municipal employees. Through this project Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has organized energy awareness conferences and presentations in public institutions, schools and public spaces. Through these energy trainings, we aim to raise awareness among the following groups.
- Students,
- Teachers,
- Educational Institutions,
 - Public Space,
During the two-month period, 4386 students and 1000 municipal employees were given energy awareness training in the 37 educational institutions.

Istanbul is a city in full evolution. The city has a remarkable economic and cultural dynamism in and out of its borders. But the populairty of the city impacts negatively on city planning and energy consumption. The population of Istanbul is approaching 20 million people and the city accounts for 10% of Turkey's overall energy consumption.

The main source of energy in Turkey is through conventional energy resources, but there is large potential in renewable energy sources, which Istanbul would like exploit. Through Turkey's National Energy Efficiency Action Pland, 2017-2023, municipalites have more power when it comes to energy efficiency.

Istanbul Municipality is a member of Compact of Mayors and is committed to reduce its CO2 emissions by at least 20 % by 2020. The energy awareness trainings initiated by Istanbul Municipality, are also aligned with the SDGs.

In Action

Energy Awareness Training is one of the key elements to help public istitutions and organisations reduce their carbon emissions. Our approach is driven by our belief that people make the difference and that municipal staff in the workplace and students and teachers can provide a significant contribution to improving energy efficiency. As Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, we produce effective carbon strategies specific to the public to reduce energy consumption and maximise savings.

We have a range of energy awareness training courses including seminars and presentations to suit all type of work environments. As experienced energy management consultants, we will focus not just on the technical side of carbon reduction but also on motivational techniques to ensure employees and students are encouraged to continue reducing energy consumption for the foreseeable future.

Energy awareness training is ideal for public instutions with large numbers of employees and students to enable a flexible way for public staff  and students to learn.

All of our energy awareness training will:

  • Reduce energy consumption and costs
  • Produce effective energy plans
  • Enhance the profile of our public institutions and organizations
  • Motivate and engage municipal staff and students to become more energy efficient and maximise savings.

During one academic calendar, we aim to increase energy awareness training by reaching approximately 33,000 students, teachers and municipal staff. With energy awareness trainings, we aim to achieve the following results.

- To enable students to use energy more efficiently by creating awareness about energy among our instructors and our people,

- To invest in the future of our country by increasing the knowledge and awareness level of the public,

- To reduce energy consumption and maximise savings.

- To contribute to the national economy,

- To establish joint cooperation networks at local and international level,

- To ensure the widespread use of the project at both the local and national level

- To be a part of National Energy Efficiency Week,

The total number of private and public schools in Istanbul is 6120. The number of students in these schools is 3 million. During 2018, we reached 33,000 students and municipal staff, who will contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions and will use energy more efficiently. Students and municipal staff who are sensitive to the environment and who make energy savings, will contribute greatly to the national economy.

Challenges and lessons learned

Thriugh the energy trainings, we aim to create a new approach on energy efficiency and renewable energy sources by informing teachers and their students. Indeed the terms of energy efficiency and renewable energy is common but their applications in real life are very hard. Firstly, we would like create a new thing for youth in Istanbul in their current life. Secondly, through involving municipal staff on this project, we would like create a new link between youth and the municipal services. Involving youth in helping to tackle problems that effect our city and the world is important to us.
