The project was launched in the Basque Country, by GAP España in conjunction with Government of Bizkaia and 6 other public and private partners.
The aim was to enable local communities and citizens to transform by empowering them through taking "actions", hence the name "Actívate+". The strategy was to engage schools, families and the community to encourage change in relation to sustainability.
Two GAP programmes were implemented: one aimed at reducing energy & waste in school buildings and the other minimizing daily negative habits in relation to water, energy consumption and mobility using the household as the focal point.

Donostia / San Sebastián City Council
, Spain
San Sebastián is a medium-sized city with more than 186,000 inhabitants. It is a tertiary, tourist city, eminently commercial, with strong emphasis on services and congresses. In recent years, San Sebastián has moved into a leading position among European cities, largely because of its commitment to science, technology, sustainable development and culture. Its designation as European Capital of Culture in 2016 confirms this pledge.
For the last 25 years, the city has been enforcing a strong integrated mobility policy in favour of pedestrians, bicycles and public transport. This includes promoting active modes of transport, including the introduction of innovative measures, as well as integrated strategies to increase the number of people walking, cycling and using public transport, while simultaneously reducing the use of cars. The city has also worked to create more people-friendly spaces. These measures have a significant impact on the policy fields of energy, transport, and environmental sustainability. By reducing on-street parking and returning public space to the people, the city is an even more attractive place to be.

We started working with the initiative "Eraztun Berde-Urdina (EBU)" in December 2009, the basis for the creation of the Green-Blue Belt of Zarautz, when we gave the order to write a project that would improve the conservation of the green areas and the biodiversity of Zarautz. In this project actions (recovery of wetlands, improvement of forests) are being carried out in the areas surrounding the municipality (mainly in those that lack some type of protection). In addition, the project is based on three main objectives:
- Biodiversity and care of the green areas that surround the municipality.
- Give citizens the opportunity to enjoy leisure outdoors and be in contact with nature.
- Publicize the natural resources of Zarautz.
To give the option to enjoy leisure we have trained a circular route of 11 kilometers.

Lousada is implementing an innovative way of educating for sustainability. Environmental education is being informally embedded in many different actions across the whole society, so that good environmental practices become natural and needed, without necessarily titling initiatives as ‘green propaganda’.
We are working with schools, private businesses and land owners, cultural groups, sports teams, parishes, the elderly, and many other groups to transform the socio-cultural and economic paradigm in this markedly rural community. We are inspiring and supporting alternative ways of creating conservation areas and job opportunities, engaging the community in doing so while taking care of their natural resources.

KATOobywatel (resident) project comes from the residents’ needs for a clean, green, aesthetic and climate resilient city. But the most important, in our opinion, was agency - having a direct and tangible influence on shared space. Meantime, we focused on building a civic society which takes responsibility for its surroundings and then starting a reliable dialogue with it. To this end we have been using apps, actions and campaigns which have been carried out since 2018 and they are all based on social engagement. We believe that only close cooperation and mutual trust can result in good and long-term outcomes.

Climate change impacts will change our cities and our culture. Cultural Adaptations is a highly innovative project with partners in four EU city-regions, exploring creativity in urban adaptation. Combining research, practice and policy through a series of activities, collaborations and digital resource development, the project is creating free-to-use toolkits to guide creative, socially transformative adaptation for city-regions across Europe.
Partnerships of municipalities and cultural organisations embed artists directly in adaptation processes, exploring how creative approaches can create more effective solutions to climate change challenges, and how adapting cities’ cultural SMEs can connect community and regional-level adaptation within existing strategies.

Legazpi Local Council has prepared a Sustainable Development and Climate Change Strategy, known as Legazpi Klima 2030.
It is a reflection on how we envisage Legazpi will be in 15 years time: what energy we will be using, how we will travel around, which economic sectors we want to drive, what problems climate change will cause, how we will protect ourselves, how we will address ageing, and how we will look after the natural environment.
Councillors, municipal technicians and the citizens of Legazpi were involved in preparing the Diagnosis and the Action Plan. Both the Diagnosis and the 2017-2024 Action Plan have also been published in “Lectura Fácil” [Easy Ready] so that can be understood by people with reading difficulties.

Let's "cup2gether" - circular cup initiative to foster climate protection and sharing economy
Organisation
:
Cup2gether
, Germany
In our city Frankfurt, we have to face 25 million single use cups per year becoming waste. There are some highly committed people bringing own cups or avoiding coffee-to-go, but most of us got used to mobile consumption - we don't want to change culture by prohibition, we want to establish a culture which desires for sustainable solutions. So we started an initiative called "cup2gether" that activated local ambassadors for a circular cup system with a regional produced cup (made of leavings from paper industry, natural resources). We started as official "90-days-challenge" against municipality. Now we established the citywide system.

Through the formulation of a regional development agenda, regional change has started. A change that strengthens the economic, ecological and social possibilities of our region and increases it’s resilience. A change that opens doors for a multi-perspective approach. An approach in which citizens, local companies, local government, the educational system and local research institutes work together towards new innovative solutions for local problems. An approach that leads inevitably to intersectoral, and thus innovative, solutions, while forming new intersectoral relationships, a change in responsibilities, the creation of new business (and business models).
