What does a bus station, a park or a tunnel say about equality and gender issues? The Gendered Landscape allows visitors to travel through the city of Umeå, a municipality that has worked broadly with issues of gender equality for a long time. The method exemplifies successful changes and landmarks in the city and illuminates remaining issues and challenges in relation to the goals for gender equality. San Sebastián is a medium-sized city with more than 186,000 inhabitants. It is a tertiary, tourist city, eminently commercial, with strong emphasis on services and congresses. In recent years, San Sebastián has moved into a leading position among European cities, largely because of its commitment to science, technology, sustainable development and culture. Its designation as European Capital of Culture in 2016 confirms this pledge.
For the last 25 years, the city has been enforcing a strong integrated mobility policy in favour of pedestrians, bicycles and public transport. This includes promoting active modes of transport, including the introduction of innovative measures, as well as integrated strategies to increase the number of people walking, cycling and using public transport, while simultaneously reducing the use of cars. The city has also worked to create more people-friendly spaces. These measures have a significant impact on the policy fields of energy, transport, and environmental sustainability. By reducing on-street parking and returning public space to the people, the city is an even more attractive place to be.

"LUCIOLE project" : Urban light optimised for the environment
City/Region
:
City of Lille
, France
Outdoor night time lighting is very present in urban spaces. It’s a major part of ecological disruption and it negatively impacts fauna and flora.
LUCIOLE project aims to limit the impact of light pollution on bats, moths, and the nocturnal insects they feed on. This black network includes a 13-hectare perimeter within a larger biodiversity area of 40 hectares, which will be equipped with a public lighting system that is designed to facilitate the animal travel that traditional lighting impedes. This innovative project has benefited from European Union support, as a part of the ERDF "Nature in the City" program.

The Open air Theatre is located within the lungs of the city, in the Grand Lake of Tirana. 400 Artists performed during its opening event in 2018, in turn transforming this public space into one of the most important socio-cultural engines of the city.
Build in 1973, concepted from the first Albanian woman architect Valentina Pistoli in 1957, it was left to deteriorate after the 90s. The old amphitheatre was restored, and so were the memories of citizens. “We don't just make infrastructure, bricks, concrete, lighting, we actually build a stage for memories in this city,” says Mayor Erion Veliaj.

Vilnius - becoming the new sustainable transportation hub of Europe
City/Region
:
Vilnius
, Lithuania
Our transformative action is about changing mobility culture in the city. Vilnius seeks to move from car-centric city and become sustainable mobility hub, where the most convenient way to move around is by walking, cycling or public transport. It does not mean we want to worsen commuting conditions for cars, but our goal is to create equally good conditions for all mobility means and encourage people to choose alternative means of transport, which are more eco-friendly, better for your well-being and gives a pleasure of daily commute.
We started working with the initiative "Eraztun Berde-Urdina (EBU)" in December 2009, the basis for the creation of the Green-Blue Belt of Zarautz, when we gave the order to write a project that would improve the conservation of the green areas and the biodiversity of Zarautz. In this project actions (recovery of wetlands, improvement of forests) are being carried out in the areas surrounding the municipality (mainly in those that lack some type of protection). In addition, the project is based on three main objectives:
- Biodiversity and care of the green areas that surround the municipality.
- Give citizens the opportunity to enjoy leisure outdoors and be in contact with nature.
- Publicize the natural resources of Zarautz.
To give the option to enjoy leisure we have trained a circular route of 11 kilometers.

The old Bazaar represented one of Tirana's most iconic symbols of traditional urban life. The area housed some 15 cultural heritage sites protected by law, which were hidden under rundown facades. The space itself contained obsolete infrastructure and generally unappealing commercial spaces.
The New Bazar has been transformed into a pedestrian area, a lively shopping district, an eating and night-life space and a perfect tourist destination, through joint cooperation between private businesses and the Municipality. The New Bazaar's ambitious project saw some $5.5 million of investments from foreign grants and Tirana Municipality's budgets, while private investment by private businesses exceeded $4 million.

Lousada is implementing an innovative way of educating for sustainability. Environmental education is being informally embedded in many different actions across the whole society, so that good environmental practices become natural and needed, without necessarily titling initiatives as ‘green propaganda’.
We are working with schools, private businesses and land owners, cultural groups, sports teams, parishes, the elderly, and many other groups to transform the socio-cultural and economic paradigm in this markedly rural community. We are inspiring and supporting alternative ways of creating conservation areas and job opportunities, engaging the community in doing so while taking care of their natural resources.

KATOobywatel (resident) project comes from the residents’ needs for a clean, green, aesthetic and climate resilient city. But the most important, in our opinion, was agency - having a direct and tangible influence on shared space. Meantime, we focused on building a civic society which takes responsibility for its surroundings and then starting a reliable dialogue with it. To this end we have been using apps, actions and campaigns which have been carried out since 2018 and they are all based on social engagement. We believe that only close cooperation and mutual trust can result in good and long-term outcomes.

As a whole, the programme represents “a zero waste of ideas paradigm”, in which good ideas are identified, filtered, evolved through crowd-wisdom, and are then transformed into real pilots whose impact is disseminated back to the community through the power of artistic representation of urban data. This in turn fosters a cultural shift in citizens towards city making. “100IdeasZGZ” connects bottom-up ideas from civic communities with the technical skills of local geeks. The Superblock model is a way of organizing the city based on reversing the distribution of public space among vehicles and people, giving priority to the citizens to improve environmental conditions and people’s quality of life.
Superblocks are new urban units, larger than a block, but smaller than a neighbourhood. The implementation of superblocks is part of the Urban Mobility Plan, which is aimed at reducing private traffic by 21% and increasing the use of bicycles, public transport and walking.
This functional restructuring of Barcelona enables people to retake public areas generating a public space full of life.

Our idea resulted from the fact that the settlements were built on high hills around Sarajevo through history. We present project that is inovative and the first one which bridges a centuries-old aspiration of connecting two hillsides of the city, but doesn’t violate the appearance of old town. We would improve existing cable car and add component of public transport in hillside settlements to it. This conceptual design represents potential of Sarajevo getting new cable car in the area of hillside on other part of old town, which gives Sarajevo an opportunity to be unique.

Our idea is to encourage people to drink tap water using reusable bottles and to refill them from sustainable refill stations, for a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable city, promoting the image of the city and its actions and also the renovation of these important facilities making them more attractive in urban terms as well.
The goal is the installation of these facilities in strategic places outdoors encouraging tap water consumption and to contribute to reduce the number of plastic bottles by increasing confidence in tap water and improving and facilitating its access.
